Apparently They’re Putting Campers on Tactical Vehicles Now
Used to carry soldiers and cargo. Now: kids and s’mores.
As modern warfare advances at a rapid clip, moving to the realms of computers and remote-controlled weaponry, what happens to the military’s outdated vehicles?
They become campers, of course.
At least that’s the premise behind Hunter RMV’s Predator 6.6, a five-person off-road RV. The Nevada company showcased the repurposed Stewart and Stevenson M1078 4×4 light medium tactical vehicle (LMTV) at Overland Expo West, where it was, naturally, the belle of the ball.
As Hunter RMV notes, LMTVs were previously used as soldier and cargo transports. And that’s what it’ll be for you, except the battalion is your family and the cargo is as many bags of Kettle Brand Spicy Queso Krinkle Cut Potato Chips as you can fit in the kitchen cabinets.
Beyond ample storage space, there’s genuinely too much RV to handle in so short a time, but here are some highlights:
For tackling terrain your tow-behind used to get stuck in, the Predator clocks in at roughly 27.5 feet long, 13.2 feet tall and 8 feet wide, with a 22-inch ground clearance. All that girth is powered by a 6-cylinder, 6.6L Caterpillar diesel engine that’s turbocharged and aftercooled.
While a standard build offers a 400-mile range and max speed of 58 MPH, a behemoth like this offers near limitless upgrades — including faster road axles for a 70 MPH max speed and more fuel storage for a range of more than 800 miles.
As for the interior? Let’s just say the current models could use a visit from the Queer Eye guys. But at least the essentials are accounted for: queen bed, two bunks, switch-controlled awning, dinette, double-door refrigerator, two-burner stovetop and even an optional washer/dryer combo.
On their website, Hunter RMV lists two Predator 6.6s currently for sale: one built on a 1998 Stewart & Stevenson for $178.5K, and one on a 2003 model for $197.5K.
