An all-new 2017 Ford GT commemorative-edition supercar is set to hit the market later this year.

The American automaker is building 500 GTs over the next two years and will also offer a limited number of heritage packages.

The ’66 Heritage Edition is a throwback to the original GT40 Mark II, which kicked off a string of historic wins at Le Mans in 1966. Driven to victory by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, the race car remains one of Ford’s most celebrated achievements five decades later.

The new signature look features shadow black paint (in your choice of either a gloss or matte finish), silver racing stripes, “frozen white” #2 gumballs on the hood and sides, and exposed carbon fiber package. The 20-inch wheels have a gold satin clear coat and the carbon fiber seats are upholstered in a rich ebony leather. Aside from the Heritage black, the new GT is available in eight colors: white, blue, red, black, yellow, gray, and silver.

Prospective buyers must be granted the stamp of approval by the automaker before they can take home one of the 600-plus horsepower, twin turbo, hand-built supercars. To be considered, applicants must fill out a detailed online questionnaire. According to motortrend.com, over 6,000 hopefuls have already thrown their hats in the ring. Those who are selected will be contacted by a Ford GT Concierge Service to complete the roughly $400,000 purchase. By Reilly Dowd, RealClearLife Contributor
