Coming Across The Block: One Epic ‘54 Pegaso Berlinetta

In Greek mythology, Pegasus was a winged stallion sired by Poseidon (god of horses, in addition to the seas) and born of the Gorgon Medusa, later tamed by Athena before becoming sidekick to the warrior Perseus.

Inevitably, someone decided to name a car brand after this creature. Miraculously, the car brand in question actually made a model that lived up to it.

Built at the legendary Hispano-Suiza factory in Barcelona, the Pegaso Z-102 was a twin-cam V8 coupe seen as Spain’s answer to Ferrari. It enjoyed a short but heralded production run (1951-58), at one point laying claim to the title of fastest production car on earth, with a top speed of 150 mph.

During that time, French custom coachmaker Saoutchik decided to build a fleet of custom second-series Berlinettas on the Z-102 chassis. The one you see here is one of seven, and it’s set to sail across the auction block at RM Sotheby’s forthcoming Monterey event.

The ride still retains its original matching engine numbers and 95% of the parts, though it underwent an award-winning restoration in the 1990s. The only major component that had to be replaced was the gearbox, which was sourced from a similar model to maintain the car’s heritage.

It’s touted to fetch between $725,000 and $900,000 at auction. But with that tuxedo livery and a fine red leather interior, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a full-on gentlemen’s fight break out over her come August 18th.
