‘Lost’s’ Damon Lindelof Developing ‘Watchmen’ Series for HBO
Show is network's second attempt at bringing famed '80s comic to small screen.
Who will watch Watchmen? HBO is hoping millions upon millions more viewers, as the cable network is tapping Damon Lindelof, creator of popular TV dramas such as Lost and The Leftovers, to develop a series based on the late-’80s DC Comics masterpiece, per Variety.
It may be an uphill battle, though. A film version, directed by Zach Snyder, hit theaters in 2009, but failed to connect with viewers and underperformed (though it did land a decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Also, HBO has been eyeing Watchmen as a potential series since 2014.
The film noir-style plot of the comic revolves around a dystopian universe in which superheroes altered the course of American history, helping to win the Vietnam War and keep President Nixon in power. Years later, retired superheroes are called in to investigate the death of one of their own.
The comic, considered one of the finest the medium ever produced, made Time magazine’s list of “100 Best Novels.”
