This Robot Controls Its Own Movements

Another significant step has been taken into making the future envisioned by The Terminator a reality. Created by two robotics laboratories in Tokyo and Osaka, this robot (named Alter) moves based on sensors that detect noise, temperature, humidity, and proximity … and it does these things without human control.

Yes, these jerky, erratic movements are the actions of a fully autonomous being. (Albeit one leading quite a limited existence, as you can see from watching it for a minute or two.) Regardless, Alter’s neural network is proof that a computer system modeled on the human brain and nervous system can approach something that approximates a sentient creature: based on every science fiction work ever written, this won’t turn out well.
