Does James Bond's Tailor Need to Rethink His Style Evolution?

If a single-sourced Mirror story from last week is true—and we haven’t heard anything in the interim to shoot it down—Daniel Craig will return as James Bond in the follow-up to 2015’s Spectre.

But Esquire‘s U.K. edition argues that if Craig’s truly coming back, it’s time, then, for a James Bond style reboot, too. While Craig is arguably one of the most stylish of the modern-era Bonds (here’s looking at your awful, puffy shirts, Timothy Dalton), with his monochromatic suits and such, explains the magazine, it’s time to have a bit more “fun” with his wardrobe. “The clothes, much like the setting and storyline of the films, have become somewhat formulaic,” writes Esquire‘s Finlay Renwick.

What Esquire U.K. hopes out loud is that Craig’s couture ends up reflecting more of the Sean Connery or Roger Moore styles from the ’60s or ’70s.

But when RCL interviewed Suits of James Bond creator Matt Spaiser for our You Only Live Twice story last month, he told us the most stylish Bond movie in history was On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the movie starring the lone one-time Bond, George Lazenby. “Overall, I think the suits are some of the most beautiful of the series,” Spaiser said.

And upon reading an earlier version of this article, Spaiser took immediate exception with Esquire‘s premise. “I don’t think of Daniel Craig’s wardrobe in Spectre was all that different from Lazenby’s overall,” he told RCL in an email. “And for [Esquire U.K.] to complain about Craig wearing too many grey suits and saying he should dress [more] like Connery makes no sense at all. Most of the time, Connery was wearing grey suits in his Bond films!”

Spaiser goes on to say that we can blame the blandness of Craig’s wardrobe in Spectre on the film’s cinematographer. “Craig wore two very bright blue suits in the film, but the blues were mixed down so that the bright blue suits ended up looking very dull,” he writes.

If you took RCL‘s advice and watched Becoming Bond on Hulu, you’ll have learned that Lazenby was no amateur when it came to fashion sense; he was a model before his turn as Bond.

So the powers that be behind Bond should stick with the Lazenby paradigm; you can’t argue with a former model. But they should definitely tweak that cinematography.
