Ultimate MLB Power Rankings: Week 5

We used ESPN, CBS Sports and USA Today’s power ranks to create an all-new tiered list.

Separated by just a single game, the 25-9 Boston Red Sox and 24-10 New York Yankees have the best records in Major League Baseball as play in the fifth week of the regular season begins.

But, are the Sox and Yanks the most powerful teams in the league? According to power rankers from ESPN, CBS Sports and USA Today, you can bet your chowder, Manhattan or clam, on it.

In fact, according to power rankers at those sites, Boston and New York are in a class of their own 34 games into the season, a finding that became clear after we combined the numbers from ESPN, CBS Sports and USA Today to get one, definitive ranking.

Using those figures, we then broke the list of 30 down into tiers to make it even easier to see, at least at this point in the season, which teams are contenders, which are pretenders and which, because of their offensive play, are offenders.
