At a meager +20 in run differential, the Seattle Mariners don’t even rank in the top 10 league-wide and are more than 100 runs behind the leader in that statistic, the Houston Astros (+ 127).

However, the Mariners are ahead of the Astros in a more important area: the standings.

In fact, at 41-24, after going 8-2 in their last 10 games, the first-place AL West Mariners now have the third-best record in baseball, behind only the Yankees and Red Sox.

One of the biggest reasons for that is the Mariners are clutch. They have a 21-9 record in one-run games and have gone undefeated in extra innings this year at 6-0.

Consistently hanging around in MLB’s second tier of teams, the Mariners have finally convinced the power rankers from  ESPNCBS Sports and USA Today that they are elite and have moved up once again in this week’s edition of RealClearLife‘s Ultimate Power Rankings, which combine ratings from those three sites to get a single definitive rank for all the teams in Major League Baseball.

To see how far the Mariners have risen, check out the full list and segmented tiers in our Ultimate Power Rankings.
