Jerry Jones will not sue Roger Goodell over the commissioner’s contract extension, but the Dallas Cowboys’ owner is not done fighting, reports USA Today.
“I want accountability,” Jones said, according to USA Today. This means that Jones wants all of the owners, not just the six-member compensation committee, to finalize the extension package, which reportedly could bring the commissioner’s annual pay to roughly $50 million.
All 32 owners, including Jones, authorized the compensation committee to close Goodell’s next deal back in May. Jones had been an ad hoc member of the committee until Roger Goodell suspended Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott for violating the league’s personal conduct policy amid domestic violence allegations, USA Today reports. Jones later threatened to come after Goodell using profane language, according to an ESPN report, though Jones repeatedly said the fight wasn’t about Elliott.
“This is not about replacing Roger,” Jones said, according to USA Today. “It’s a misnomer to say it’s payback for Ezekiel Elliott. It is about the accountability of the commissioner to all of the ownership.”
The contract is expected to be finished by early next week.
