Burton’s New Film Will Make You Want to Go Snowboarding (Even If You’ve Never Been Snowboarding)

Go ahead, tell us that this doesn’t look like the most fun you can have in the snow

With COVID cases across the country spiking like a meth-addled Karch Kiraly, the coming ski/snowboard season looks fraught at best. In your correspondent’s humble opinion, this situation would be enough of a bummer on its own without the fine folks at Burton doing what they do best — namely, dropping a snowboard movie that makes anyone who has ever strapped a board to his or her feet (and likely a great number who haven’t) really want to go out and ride. Like, immediately.

One World, the first Burton film shot since founder Jake Burton Carpenter’s untimely passing from cancer last November, kicks off with archival footage of the legend himself in the sport’s early days and closes with interview audio and more recent footage of him enjoying the fruits of his lifelong labor alongside Burton’s family of pro riders.

In between: 40 minutes of those pro riders going absolutely bonkers all over the globe — One World was shot in 12 snowy locations on three continents, with a murderer’s row of topflight talent including Danny Davis, Mark McMorris, Anna Gasser and Red Gerard tackling everything from backcountry kickers in Jackson Hole to nail-biting couloirs in Alaska to the frozen residential streets of St. John, Newfoundland. Regardless of location, the sense of camaraderie among the riders is immediate and palpable, a testament to Jake’s legacy as a staunch proponent of community as a central tenet of snowboarding.

“In a normal year, it’s easy to take all these trips for granted,” McMorris recently told Forbes. “With winter ending early for many of us this year, I really missed the global snowboard community and all the friends I have around the world.”

Trudat, Mark — guess the movie will just have to do for now.

One World is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
