The ‘Greatest Ever Road Race’ Is Back, Better Than Ever

Bespoke Rallies invites you on a romp through South America

Every journey, it is often said, starts with a single step.

That was the case for Juan Manuel Fangio when he embarked on a 6,215-mile trek from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Caracas, Venezuela at midnight on October 20, 1948. Except his step was on the gas pedal of a Chevy Master.

Sometimes referred to as “the greatest ever road race,” the journey Fangio began that day was officially called the Grand Prix of South America.

For whatever reason, it was never held again.

Thankfully, Bespoke Rallies is giving classic rally drivers the chance to follow in Fangio’s tire tracks this October to honor the Grand Prix’s 70th anniversary.

Departing from Buenos Aires at the same time original winner Fangio did 70 years earlier, the inaugural re-running of the Grand Prix will follow the first route as closely as possible, starting in Argentina and winding through Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.

“Where the roads are new we will find the old and where they have been covered in tarmac we will look for dirt,” the organizers say. “We make no secret that this will be rough and tough in places and it will certainly test man and machine but it will be an incredible experience for all.”

That said, the $48,750-and-up entry fee includes hotel accommodations and most meals, first aid services for racers and their rides, a set of rally plates and third-party insurance coverage.

If you’re raring to start your engine next October, here’s where to sign up for the event.
