Appearing at the annual Women for Women International Conference in New York City on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton said she takes “personal responsibility” for losing the 2016 presidential election against then-Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“I am writing a book, and it is a painful process reliving the campaign,” Clinton said. ”I take absolute personal responsibility. I was the candidate. I was the person on the ballot.”
However, Clinton also pointed to FBI Director Jim Comey’s late October letter and Russian interference in the election as additional factors that swayed the final result in Donald Trump’s favor.
“Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me but were scared off,” Clinton said. Russian President Vladimir Putin “certainly interfered in our election…to hurt me and help my opponent,” she claimed, though any definitive link between the Russian government and the the hacking of the DNC’s emails has not been proven.
“I’m back to being an active citizen, and part of the resistance.”
