What a difference a pitch deck makes.

Before it did everything from break important political stories to count down the top 46 cutest kittens on the internet, BuzzFeed was a tiny outlet with just five employees generating 700,000 unique website visitors per month.

Amazingly enough, that was less than 10 years ago.

In 2008, the company — which now has more than 1,300 employees spread throughout 18 worldwide office and is worth $1.5 billion according to some estimates — put together an investor deck and BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti presented it to potential investors.

Highlighted by the Venn diagram you see above that highlights the way BuzzFeed wanted to position itself between content and advertising, the pitch deck was strong enough to earn the firm $3.5 million from a quartet of investors during Series A fundraising.

Along with that successful pitch deck, venture capital blogger Sathyvelu Kunashegaran has collected another 39 offerings from funded firms like Tinder, LinkedIn and YouTube that collectively helped bring in $700 million in investment cash.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for a pitch of your own, we’d suggest giving ‘em a look.
