Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter Says He’s Shocked By Rape Accusations
Former pop star Melissa Schuman alleges that Carter raped her in his apartment in 2002.
Singer Nick Carter has responded to the rape allegations levied against him by Melissa Schuman, saying he is “shocked and saddened” by the accusations, reports BuzzFeed.
Schuman, a former member of the all-girl pop group Dream, alleged in a blog post that Carter raped her at her apartment in 2002 when she was an 18-year-old virgin and he was 22. Carter provided a statement to Buzzfeed, saying Schuman had “never expressed” to him that what they did was not consensual. The Backstreet Boys singer also said this is the first time he had heard of her accusations, nearly two decades after the alleged event.
Schuman’s blog post said that Carter invited her to his apartment after they were cast together in the same made-for-TV movie. She claims to have gone to his apartment in Santa Monica with her roommate. She said that Carter then led her to his office, and they began to kiss. Schuman wrote that Carter knew she was a virgin and was aware she had “religious conservative Christian values,” according to BuzzFeed.
Schuman writes that then Carter took her to the bathroom and performed oral sex on her, despite her protests to stop. He then demanded she perform oral sex on him, according to BuzzFeed, and was upset when she declined.
She said that she felt the only way “to get out was to get him to finish what he had started.” She writes that Carter then took her to the bedroom, where he “threw me on the bed and climbed on top of me.” He refused to listen to her when she said no, Schuman alleges, and when she said she was a virgin and was “saving herself for her future husband,” Carter replied, “I could be your husband,” according to BuzzFeed.
Schuman said that she told her then-manager, Nils Larsen about the incident, but he told her that Carter had “the most powerful litigator in the country” and she would be “buried in humiliation” and “accused of being fame hungry,” according to BuzzFeed.
She decided to go public following a Radar report that said Carter was investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a party.
