David Rockefeller, the billionaire banker and philanthropist who was the last surviving member of his generation in one of America’s most powerful families, died Monday.
He was 101.
Rockefeller died at home in his sleep in Pocantico Hills, New York, according to his spokesman, Fraser P. Seitel. He was the last surviving grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, who became the country’s first billionaire and wielded unparalleled political power in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
Like many in his family, David Rockefeller’s influence was felt not just throughout Manhattan, but the world at large. He traveled the world, speaking about the importance of enlightened capitalism, as well as championing philanthropic causes that ranged from environmental conservation to the arts.
