The Internet, as the Internet does, is going bananas about the fact that you can buy Samoas, Thin Mints, Tagalongs and other Girl Scout cookies on Amazon now. Not only that, but some are available with Prime shipping.
As an avid Amazon patron myself, I admit I was excited, too. That is until I stopped to think about it for a moment and realized that every time someone buys a box of Girl Scout Cookies from Amazon, an adorable Girl Scout goes to hell.
All you need to do is to take a closer look at the Girl Scout Cookie program to understand why. Besides providing delicious treats, the program’s overall mission is to instill financial literacy in girls, which is learned through selling and interacting with customers.
Amazon’s cookies — which are being sold at an absurd markup at $10 a box — are from resellers. Certified resellers, but resellers nonetheless. Not only is the markup bad form, it also undercuts everything Girl Scout Cookies stand for.
So in the name of girl-led businesses, let’s stick to buying those delicious treats direct, which you can do here, or outside your local grocery store when the time comes.
