Movin’ on Upstate
Summer’s coming. And in the summer, New York City smells … unkempt.
With that in mind, you should begin making your plans to decamp posthaste. We’ve already led you to the choicest Long Island rentals. Now, kindly direct your attention upstate. There, the most charming estates – i.e., the ones with both lakeside jetties and Viking appliances – get booked up quick. Below, your guide to your next weekend getaway.
New Paltz – Cozy Romantics
Once a schoolhouse, this 200+ year-old stone cottage has been completely retrofitted into a cozy couples cabin complete with whitewashed masonry, brick fireplace and decor that would shame a Restoration Hardware catalog. Outside: a terrace to view local fauna (Hey, is that a blue heron?) and a short stroll to The Gunks’ famed hiking, climbing and postcard waterfalls.
Rhinebeck – City Meets Country
For a touch of city mouse in the country house, try this sprawling, former-hardware-store loft of brick, wood-plank floors and exposed beams – fully accessible via Metro North. Locally sourced antique furniture, a massive, fully-equipped kitchen for appeasing your inner gourmand and nearby shops, restaurants and charming indie cinema Upstate Films (hub of the Woodstock Film Festival) await.
Catskill – Group Outings
Need extra room? This 70s-era Mediterranean-style villa sleeps 14, perfect for multiple couples or family trips. You’ll preside over 7,000 kitschy square feet, complete with Roman archways, a massive veranda with panoramic mountain views and a courtyard pool and patio for warm weather lounging. Nearby golf, boating and horseback riding should keep the crew entertained.
Tillson – Zen Retreat
Just two hours north of the city lies a cluster of four authentic Balinese pavilions that were disassembled on the tropical isle, shipped halfway around the world, and rebuilt on the edge of a placid upstate swimming pond. Admire intricate carvings, thatch-and-bamboo ceilings and a glassed-in walkway connecting the bungalows, all featuring mod-cons like central air and radiant tile floors.
So you’ve just got to worry about your meditation.
