It’s taken a few years, but Top Gun 2 has been cleared for takeoff, and star Tom Cruise may have settled in on who he wants behind the controls.
Cruise is eyeing Joseph Kosinski, who directed the action star in Oblivion as director for the sequel to the 1986 hit, Variety is reporting.
Sources told the industry trade that an offer will soon be made to Kosinski, since Cruise wants to jump into Top Gun 2 as soon as he wraps Mission: Impossible 6.
The sequel had been delayed by the August 2012 suicide of original director Tony Scott. Shortly before the 68-year-old filmmaker jumped to his death off Los Angeles’s Vincent Thomas Bridge, he had been scouting locations for Top Gun 2.
But after years of on-again, off-again reports, Cruise confirmed Wednesday to the Australian morning show, Sunrise, the filming would begin next year.
