You may not know you need a Dutch oven. In fact, you most likely own or are thinking about buying an Instant Pot, that wondrous multifunctional cooker that’s been on everyone’s wish list.

But before the Instant Pot craze, there was the cast-iron Dutch oven, the heavy lidded pot beloved for its ability to maintain an even temperature and transition seamlessly from stovetop to the oven and back again. Sure, it may require a touch of finesse, but it’s just as effective as its modern electric counterpart.

The list of things you can achieve with a quality Dutch oven is long and varied:

  • Baking bread!
  • Frying things!
  • Braising meats!
  • Poaching meats!
  • Stewing stews!
  • Making soup!
  • Searing steak!
  • Searing steak and finishing it in the oven!

Only problem? They’re an investment, with pots from familiar names like Le Creuset and Staub fetching for over $300. Milo, a new cookware startup, however, is selling one for $95.

It’s a welcome alternative, and comes at a time when new direct-to-consumer kitchenware companies seem to be popping up everywhere, from handsome starter sets (see: Made In and Material) to the essentials (see: Misen and Gir).

Milo’s five-quart Dutch oven falls under the essentials. Not only is it the perfect size, it’s equally versatile, featuring a cast-iron construction that works well on all heat sources, from gas to open flame. It’s easy on the eyes, too, making it easy ideal if you wanna pull the ultimate home cook power move: the oven-to-table presentation.

Try doing that with an Instant Pot.
