Polo shirts are an ideal layer, with one big caveat.

But first, the superlatives. The polo is more elevated than a tee, thanks to that collar, but less stuffy than a button-down. They’re also endlessly versatile (sporty, business casual, etc.) and usually long-lasting while maintaining a modest price point.

Still, many polos — particularly the solid patterns — possess what I’d call a “golf dad” vibe (though there are worse connotations).

If you’re not into crazy patterns, a polo with tipping on the collar and sleeves provides contrast and definition. And a better backstory.

For many, the association with tipped polos arrives via music. While GQ correlates their popularity with decades of Brit-rock, for me the style was a staple at the ska, punk and hardcore shows I attended in ‘90s and early oughts; I spent several years sporting a black Sick of It All polo with white tipping.

Several brands both classic (Fred Perry) and modern (Todd Snyder) are keeping the tipped polo  alive. Below, 11 standouts:

Fred Perry

Fred Perry M12

The original “British subcultural uniform,” a twin-tipped classic with a two-button placket.

Fred Perry

Fred Perry M3600

A slightly more modern and slimmer variation of the classic M12.

Original Penguin

Original Penguin Tipped Pique Polo

Unbutton this shirt and you’ll find yet another contrasting color that matches the collar tipping (also, this is your $20 option).

Todd Snyder

You want contrast? You want texture? This unique TS take is crafted from Italian cotton-silk yarn, and features contrast tipping on the placket, collar, pocket, waistband and cuffs.

Paul Smith

Paul Smith Slim-Fit Zebra Logo

A tighter fit with more aggressive contrasts — witness the black with double rust tipping.

J Crew

J. Crew Tipped Pique Flex Polo

A subtler tipping (collar only) and the added stretch makes this a comfier wear. Also? Now 60% off.

Express

Express Piped Moisture Wicking Polo

The contrasts here make this a bit more interesting than your typical white polo, and the technical aspects here mean it’s ideal for sports and summer.

Mr Porter

Loro Piana Contrast-Tipped Stretch-Cotton Piqué Polo Shirt

Nothing punk rock about a $500 polo, which seems more appropriate for the designer’s annual Superyacht Regatta.

J Crew

J. Crew Linen-Cotton Short-Sleeve Tipped Polo Sweater

The mottled two-tone design adds a bit of texture to the design, and the linen adds a literal coolness.

Bonobos

Bonobos Classic Pique Polo

A more timeless style and subtler tipping, this refined take is your country club entrance card.

Asos

ASOS Design Tipped Pique Polo in Khaki

A “thyme” colorway with fitted cuffs to show off those ‘tats.
