Samsung Wants to Sell You a 12-Foot TV Called ‘The Wall’

Might not want to install this one yourself

UPDATE 7/23/18

When it debuted at CES in January, The Wall seemed like a passion project the Samsung engineers had dreamt up during their lunch hours — not an actual, functional TV for your home.

Good news: Samsung just announced it will start mass-producing the 4K, 146-inch, 80-mm TV this September. And in 2019, a 73-inch, 30-mm option — “The Wall Lite,” basically  — will follow it to market. Both are expected to be cheaper than initially expected, but you might want to start saving nonetheless.

About 350 miles away from the Mexican border, The Wall has been a hot topic of discussion this week.

We’re referring, of course, to the 146-inch television that Samsung just unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

Featuring MicroLEDs — basically pixel-sized light-emitting bulbs that shine brighter than regular LEDs — The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or a backlight. Allegedly more durable than LEDs or LCDs, The Wall’s screen also somehow uses less power than previous models, making it “the standard for future screen technology,” according to Samsung. Also of note: multiple sets can be linked together to create even bigger walls, presumably to meet the growing demand for in-home Jumbotrons.

“As the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED television, The Wall represents another breakthrough,” said Samsung Visual Display Business president Jonghee Han. “It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels.”

While there’s a lot of jargon packed into that statement, the word “consumer” is an important one — it means Samsung actually intends to sell this TV, not just show it off at trade shows.

We’ve yet to find out pricing details for the TV, but Samsung previously revealed an 88-inch model with a $20,000 price tag, so we’re guessing the cost of The Wall will be well north of that.
