Levitating cards, rubber pencils, pulling rabbits out of hats …
As a kid, I couldn’t get enough of that stuff. Hell, even as a grown adult I am only slightly ashamed to admit that I still love all things magical and/or optical illusory.
But I will not apologize for being easily amused.
I will, however, apologize for being smitten — with the Field shelf from Ukrainian designer Dmitry Kozinenko, which combines an old-fashioned optical illusion with functionality and a handsome, singular look.
How’s it work? By tactically bending and reshaping the vertical rebar that comprises the piece, Kozinenko was able to create “shelves” that can only be seen when you’re looking at them up close or in profile. In other words: the floating objects thing only works if you stand directly in front of the shelf.
And sure, the shelf-space itself is limited (it can basically only hold some bric-a-brac and maybe like one-twentieth of your book collection), but those things matter not.
What matters is the magic.
It may be an an illusion, but our love for it is not.
