While they still need to beware of snakes, spiders and chrome-sucking Warboys, there’s one thing the residents of Australia’s new “Tesla Town” won’t need to sweat:
Running out of power.
Situated outside of Melbourne, the YarraBend sustainable housing development features sustainable homes that come equipped with solar panels and Tesla Powerwalls for storing excess energy.
The development — which already has 60 of its 2,500 planned houses built — seamlessly combines community gardens, open spaces and the great outdoors with modern technology in an effort to promote wellness, green living and connectivity.
In addition to offering YarraBend residents a menu for healthy home food delivery, a custom app has been designed so townspeople will be able to access a complimentary tech-concierge as well as carpooling information and public transport timetables with a few taps on their device of choice.
In order to be “one of the most environmentally sustainable developments in Australia,” YarraBend will reduce water use by 43 percent, curb its landfill contributions by 80 percent and slash its overall energy use by 34 percent, according to Urban Development Institute of Australia chief executive Danni Addison.
The UDIA exec also expects the combination of solar panels and Powerwalls to make it free for residents to recharge their electric cars at the various charging stations scattered around town.
“The Powerwalls, combined with solar panels, will also mean that future residents will be able to benefit in a variety of ways, including dramatically smaller power bills and knowing that the majority of their energy usage is coming from a clean and renewable source,” Addison said.
The first 60 home and land packages in the development are currently up for sale ($1.1-$1.5 million), and there are also townhouse and apartment options.
