Now on Airbnb: Your Own Private Gigantic Record Store
Music nerds (like myself): Do you ever enter an amazing record store and think, “Wow, I could live here?”
That’s now a possibility. At least for one night.
“Want to recreate an iconic scene from any of the cult classics that celebrate record store culture?” asks the Airbnb listing (Empire Records? High Fidelity? Vinyl? Eh, actually not Vinyl).
Dubbed the Sonos Listening Room, the room-within-a-record-store “recreates the ultimate home audio listening experience,” giving you access to your hand-selected records of choice, a Sonos sound system (two PLAY:5s, two PLAY:1s, Connect and a Pro-ject record player) and mid-century modern furnishings.
So, basically, your audiophile dad’s idea of a man cave.
Air travel is included for out-of-towners, as is a $500 stipend and an unnamed VIP concert experience. Plus, you’ll get access to a collection of out-of-print New York music zines, a mini-fridge stocked with snacks from local vendors, and a private shopping experience in the store before it opens. Oh, and your own Sonos system to take home for keeps.
As for the accommodations part … you’ll get a real bed, but only a non-shower bathroom (if it’s the venue’s bathroom, well, as someone who’s used it, all I can say is good luck with that). No TV, gym or kitchen.
The contest runs until next Monday, with available dates on select Friday and Saturday nights in October and November. To win, you must tell Airbnb your dream overnight experience in 50-550 characters. The winner will be chosen “entirely on merit,” based on originality and spirit of the answer (“Does it evidence a deep passion for music and record store culture?”).
Seems like part of Airbnb’s larger plan to tack experiences onto their room rental biz; the company also just bought Trip4Real, a startup that allows travelers the chance to “experience cities like a local.”
