The ultimate in indoor-outdoor living

Though in temperament it better resembles New York, Johannesburg has a lifestyle — and, crucially, a climate — that is wholly L.A. The winter nights are colder due to its elevation (nearly 6,000 feet), but its commitment to all-year outdoor living is reflected in the architecture, like this monster of a house from Jozi firm Nico van der Meulen Architects, with interiors by sister firm M Square Lifestyle Design. Each of the rooms opens to the outdoors.

Located to the east of the city’s central business district, about halfway between the airport and downtown, the Kloof Road residence is nearly 12,000 square feet of living space emptying into the highveld, the country’s desert plateau. A one-in-million house in a one-in-a-million spot.
