If we had a blank check and an empty living room in need of furnishing, we’d start with the Charles and Ray Eames’ Lounge Chair and Ottoman for Herman Miller. The mid-’50s club chair is a permanent fixture in the MoMA, one of the most important designs of the 20th century, and somehow as cool today as when it was first released.

Charles Eames’ original vision was a chair that resembled a “well-used first basemen’s mitt.” The married couple realized it using molded plywood technology, and the chair has been in continuous production ever since; to this day every single Eames chair is made by hand. If you have the space, and like reading the newspaper, you can do no better than bringing one of these bad boys home.

Obviously, they’re expensive as hell, but Design Within Reach is having a limited-time sale, and the Eames Chair’s “Standard” and “Tall” versions are currently discounted around $795 and $1,170, respectively — with free shipping for each. Head here to mix and match shells and upholsteries.
