Sorry Airstream, the Holy Grail of Campers Is From BMW and the North Face

Made from a new breathable fabric called “Futurelight”

In the last year, collaborations have hit a fever pitch, with every clothing company, distiller, brewer and Beatle trying to cash in on the hype that comes with two disparate entities teaming up — some working out better than others. But everyone can go home now because everything in life is a competition and we have a winner.

Meet the camping trailer from BMW and the North Face, an ultralight two-wheeler that sleeps two. The phrase “dream team” was made for this moment.

More specifically, it was the automaker’s creative consultancy subsidiary BMW Designworks who teamed up with the outdoor retailer. Together, they designed the camper with a bunk bed, carbon skeleton frame, airless tires and an outer shell made from something called “Futurelight,” as Jalopnik writes.

A week ago, we reported on “Futurelight,” The North Face’s innovative new fabric which will be waterproof as well as breathable thanks to a process called “nanospinning.” It won’t be available until fall, but Global Manager of Mountain Sports Scott Mellin said they would be starting with jackets, tents and gloves. And this sure looks like a tent on a trailer to us, so does that mean we’ll be seeing this Airstream-dethroning camper come October?

Sorry to burst your Futurelight-spun bubble, but no. According to New Atlas, this is a concept that was designed to show off the potential for the Futurelight fabric. But the outlet also reports that the fabric will be used in North Face tents starting in 2020, so they’ve got plenty of time to rethink this grievous error.
