Years ago when the Internet had yet to become central to our lives, there was a vast underground network of old men copying pirated rock concerts from the 1960s and 1970s onto VHS video tapes and charging an arm and a leg for the grainy results. Then, YouTube launched and put them all out of business.

These days, you can find just about any rare rock-and-roll performance video on the service (whether the uploader had the legal right to put it there or not). A recent spate of rare live recordings have found their way online, and this one is among the best. It features the Jimi Hendrix Experience—in 1967, still virtually unknown to American audiences—playing a set at London’s famed Marquee Club for the German television show Beat Club. Watch as the expat and future U.S. guitar god Hendrix deftly runs through classics “Hey Joe” and “Purple Haze” on his left-hand-strung Fender Stratocaster.
