6 Simple Rules for Washing Your Workout Clothes

Surprise: Those synthetic performance shorts and shirts you’re wearing during workouts shouldn’t be washed the same way as your underwear.

Over at The Inventory (a product testing/review site from Gizmodo Media), cleaning expert Jolie Kerr compiles a pretty thorough six rules of washing your workout gear.

As she notes, some of the advice is counterintuitive. It’s worth a full read for the reasons behind each washing rule and for the product recommendations, but here’s a quick overview:

  • Manage the odors between wearing and washing
  • When washing, heat, fabric softeners and using too much detergent are your enemies.
  • Wash that gear inside out (it’s dirtier inside because sweat)
  • Use odor-eliminating laundry boosters and dryer balls
