As we head towards 2017 and plan our New Year’s resolutions, one place where we can always improve is at the gym. One fitness trend that could impact your workout regimen in 2017 is resistance training.

In the days leading up to November’s Victoria’s Secret show in Paris, the focus was on fitness rather than fashion, with everyone wanting to know the Angels’ secret to getting their famous figures catwalk-ready.

After citing the usual suspects of yoga and running, the Angels also revealed that they hit the weight room hard. With whatever the Angels do always becoming a big trend in fitness, and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) also predicting that body weight training will be the second biggest trend of 2017, with strength training at number five, resistance training looks set to grow next year.

As the name implies, body weight training uses mainly body weight as resistance to build muscle strength—think push-ups and pull-ups—while strength training involves weightlifting to build and improve strength and endurance.

Many of the Angels incorporated a mix of both types of resistance training into their workouts, using a combination of weight machines, free weights, push-ups, planks, squats, lunges, and ab workouts to build and strengthen. Examples of their intense workouts can often be found on their Instagram, with Angels such as Izabel Goulart posting videos of workouts to give you some extra ideas and motivation.

For those who already resistance train and are looking for something new, TRX training could be the way to take your workout to the next level. Created by a Navy SEAL, the strength training system provides a full body workout by using your own body weight without the need for machines or weights, and is known for its quick and impressive results. Loved by celebrities, including the Angels, TRX is available in many gyms, but once you’re familiar with the moves and equipment you can even set up your own TRX system at home.
