Well, that was fast.
A few days back, the Jaguar Vector Racing V20E easily set a new world record for a battery-powered boat on water, reaching 88.61 MPH — or more than 10 MPH higher than the previous record, which was set 10 years ago.
Using Formula E technology, the battery-powered V20E broke the maritime speed record on a 1km course at Coniston Water in Cumbria, England. A partnership between Jaguar Racing and Williams Advanced Engineering (one of the world’s leading Formula 1 teams), the team behind the V20E also announced the plan to break their new record multiple times over the next 18 months.
To achieve high speeds, the modified speedster used two Yasa electric motors powered by batteries (weighing a total of 705 lbs), which provided the electric power, motor and control systems.
While consumers won’t reach these speeds on the water anytime soon — at least with electric power — it’s a promising sign that a more sustainable watersporting future awaits.
