Watch Samsung’s New Indestructible Screen Fight a Hammer, Survive

Go ahead, torture your smartphone

It’s not entirely a clear-cut case, but cracked smartphone screens may soon be a thing of the past.

Samsung Display just unveiled its “unbreakable” OLED panel in a new online video (let’s just say the screen display’s budget obviously ate up the video production budget). The flexible display is built from a plastic substrate with an overlay window securely adhered to it. This panel is then shown to withstand aggressive hammering with no noticeable damage.

(You’ll see that the implement in question is merely a rubber mallet, but still.)

The newly developed display has also passed a military-standard durability test that included dropping the display from four feet above the ground 26 times as well as withstanding extreme heat and cold temperatures.

Beyond smartphones, the company says the display will be used on car display consoles, mobile military devices, portable gaming consoles and tablets. The catch here is that the screen material is only “very similar to glass,” meaning it might not provide the same optical quality that consumers are used to in their more fragile devices.

Then again, if you’re the type of person who drops a glass screen on the reg, chances are the visual quality is already shot regardless.
