Alexa finally got a skill that’s useful in the real world:
Keeping you warm.
Launched this week on Kickstarter, the Mercury Intelligent Heated Jacket is a smart, wind/waterproof jacket that uses machine learning to understand the wearer’s heat preferences over time, based off of body movement, internal temperature and external conditions.
The brainchild of Ministry of Supply — the designers and MIT eggheads behind some of our favorite tech-forward shirts, pants and shorts — the Mercury is also voice controlled. So when paired with an app, you can say things like “Alexa, heat up my jacket.” (Down the road expect potential Google Home and Siri support.)
The jacket features six pockets (including two zipped hand warmers), an integrated phone charger and removable hood. You can even throw it in a washing machine, though you’ll want to take out the battery first.
Available for preorder now for $195 (vest) and $265 (jacket), these are over $100 off the future retail price. The coats ship in November, right when the temps start dipping again.
