There’s been a lot of talk lately of manned missions to Mars.
The one question not enough people are asking: Just what the hell will we humanauts be wearing when we get there?

Luckily, someone’s lookin’ out: In advance of the February release of their spaceship, Virgin Galactic’s and ongoing Yohji Yamamoto/Adidas collab Y-3 just unveiled prototypes for the jet-black flight suits and boots that will outfit their space-bound crews.
You won’t find kitschy sweaters and neck-scarves here — that’s the stuff of airlines. If you’re breaking the stratosphere, you need to swap the purple, red and white for a plain black fire- (and bullet-) resistant Nomex Meta Aramid material. Each zippered suit is also made to support a pilot’s natural seating position while the boots, made of leather and Nomex, sport specially designed lugs to provide grip for walking in the cabin and cushioned soles to avoid shocks.
The crew aren’t the only ones slated to get designer duds: the roughly 700 astronaut hopefuls who’ve shelled out $250,000 in deposits to secure a seat on one of the commercial space flights will also receive commemorative Y3 jackets.
