Good Gill Hunting

They say in order to get the best, you have to “go to the source.” Unless the source is hell and gone in Alaska, and then they’re all like “just send somebody else, and take delivery.”

Hence Iliamna Fish Co.’s Sockeye Salmon CSA, which dispatches salty fisherman to ply the white-capped waters of Alaska to send fresh fish back to New York. Registration for their service ends tonight, so act now.

CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture,” and it works like this: for $198, you purchase a 12lb “share” of Iliamna’s forthcoming catch. Their crew strikes north for Alaska, where their family has been fishing the salmon spawning “runs” of icy Bristol Bay since the ’40s.

Iliamna does small-batch fishing by hand in 20-foot skiffs. They personally chill, fillet, vacuum-seal and flash freeze each fish directly onshore, then fly the catch to Brooklyn. The salmon is sushi-grade fresh; kept frozen, it’ll keep for up to six months.

To take receipt, CSA members pick up their share from Iliamna’s shop in Brooklyn.

Or, Iliamna can recommend a courier service to deliver your catch to you. This is New York, after all.
