Weekend Planner: October 7th-9th
Bacon. Dirty jokes. Secret parties. Let’s review.
Best thing about New York’s cultural scene?
It doesn’t discriminate.
One minute you’re eating a dirty-water pushcart dog, the next you’re inquiring about a bottle of Bastianich Decennale 2008 at Babbo.
Case in point: this weekend, we’ve got an itinerary that delivers no matter the arch of your brow, from the high to the middle to the, well, fairly low. Tastefully low, though.
Here’s your plan.
Dave Hill’s Super Horny Night of Comedy
Eclectic funnyman Dave Hill has rounded up a band of merrymakers for one brilliantly askew night of comedy. Expect an extended jam of erotic short stories, some endearing, all offensive.
Spanish Shoe Pop-Up
Quero, a Spanish label that peddles handsome, made-to-order dress shoes, just popped up in the city. Top-notch quality, accessible price point — it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Now through November 5th, head to the Refinery Hotel and snag yourself a pair of their handmade bespoke kicks.
Brunch With the Happiest Man Alive
An intimate affair with the one they call “The Happiest Man Alive.” Matthieu Ricard, Buddhist monk, author, Dalai Lama confidante and TED speaker, will lead a mindful meditation beforehand, and all proceeds go to rebuild schools devastated by the earthquake in Nepal. Brunch and zen: win-win.
The New Yorker Festival
Once a year, the intrepid mag comes to life with a series of intimate panels, lectures, concerts and more all over the city to which it owes its name. This go-round, the beyond-all-star lineup includes events like Keegan-Michael Key of hit ha-ha series Key and Peele talking with Henry Finder, a Mr. Robot panel with Sam Esmail and Christian Slater, Jeremy Irons conversing with Rebecca Mead and much, much more.
Field + Supply Craft Fair
Get thee to the Catskills because this isn’t your everyday craft fair. The three-day event features a careful curation of good old and new from woodwork to handcrafted knives. Plus, White Pike whiskey will be on the premises serving up white whiskey, bourbon and their specialty Sweater Weather cocktail to sip on while you peruse.
Bacon Brunch Party
Yep, we’ll drag our arses out of bed for this one. One bacon-themed bottomless brunch — including perfectly spiced bacon bloodies — plus a jammin’ DJ set brought to you by the festive animals over at Risky Business!
The style hounds over at Gilt set up shop in a four-story pop-up space and you’re invited. The schedule includes a front-row fall fashion show with a live performance by LÉON on Friday, as well as a Saturday showcase with culinary delights from James Beard Award winner Chris Fischer, closets packed with the season’s newest gear for men and women, live music by The Wild Wild, Arum Rae and Public Access TV, and live painting from coveted local artist Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic.
And the award for the vaguest event of the week goes to Seyi Kuks. What’s in store: live performances from a DJ who has produced for J Cole, Wiz Khalifa and Khelani, a rapper who is on tour with Anderson .Paak and a singer/songwriter who has written for Justin Bieber, David Guetta and Bobby Brackens. Undisclosed location, food and drinks aplenty. Okay, Kuks, we’ll bite.
