Meal Plan: Aster’s Brett Cooper

A Michelin-starred chef on his 13 favorite eats in the Mission

You might know Brett Cooper from his career-making stand as the executive chef at Outerlands, once the best reason to take the N line to (almost) the last stop.

Or you might know him from Aster, the restaurant he opened in 2015 — and which, within one year, earned its first Michelin star.

Just last week, the restaurant debuted its new seven-course tasting menu. To mark the occasion, we asked Brett where he eats on his days off.

The answer? No fewer than 13 of our favorite spots, all conveniently located in the Mission.

Breakfast: Craftsman and Wolves
“For breakfast I love grabbing a Rebel Within or breakfast sandwich from Craftsman and Wolves, and it’s hard to leave without buying a bunch of other stuff. I also love Plow if I get the chance to actually sit down with my family. My daughter is obsessed with the biscuits.”

Lunch: Wes Burger ’N’ More, La Taqueria or Wild Pepper
“For lunch, the Wes Burger Nashville hot chicken sandwich is insanely good, and I also love the carnitas burrito from La Taqueria. There are a ton of options near Aster, and I also love Wild Pepper for Chinese food.”

Snacks: Pizzeria Delfina & Lucca Ravioli Company
“The Amatriciana or Salsiccia pie from Pizzeria Delfina is good any time of the day. I’m also regularly grabbing snacks or a deli sandwich from Lucca Ravioli Company.”

Dinner: Hawker Fare
“For dinner, I love Hawker Fare. Chef James [Syhabout]’s use of traditional preparations and flavors is refreshing and extremely craveable, and you can head upstairs for great drinks at Holy Mountain, too. Some other favorites in the Mission are Namu Gaji, Frances and Ichi Sushi.”

Cocktails: Trick Dog & ABV
“Trick Dog and ABV are usually my go-tos around here for killer cocktails. Both of those spots also have great snacks and food, too, so you don’t even have to leave.”
