Earbuds that don’t go “in” your ears. Or over them. Or on them.

You crazy for this one, Bose.

The audio brand just launched Bose Sport Open Earbuds, wireless sport ‘buds that actually sit above the ear canal via a contoured earhook.

“Runners and cyclists have been asking us for headphones that let them stay focused on their performance without wires, neckbands, or having to pop out a bud to hear traffic, a training partner, nature, or anything else they don’t want to miss,” as Mehul Trivedi, category director, Bose wearable audio, said in a statement. “Our new Sport Open Earbuds solve all these problems — and they’re the only earbuds that do.”

This isn’t bone conduction or anything strange. As the company explains, you “twist” the buds to grip the ear’s outer ridge, and each enclosure uses a tiny dipole transducer that stays at the ear and “cancels” out everything else. The buds are designed so you can stay aware of your surroundings during workouts, but nobody else will hear what you’re hearing; less contact with your ears while you sweat is also a benefit.

Downside: They’re far bulkier and weigh twice as much as the AirPods Pro, as The Next Web points out.

Otherwise, the Sport Earbuds are sweat- and element-proof, run on Bluetooth 5.1 and feature buttons on each bud that handle your controls. There are an array of microphones to isolate your voice (as well as your caller’s voice or your music/podcasts). Plus, they have a better-than-average eight hours of battery life per charge.

You can pre-order a pair here for $200; they’ll ship later this month.
