You Can Now Watch Movies on IMDb for Free

Yeah, you read that right

IMDb: No longer just for figuring out where the hell you’ve seen that actor before!

That’s thanks to Freedive, a new streaming platform on the Amazon-owned site that’ll let you watch a selection of movies and TV shows without any need for a paid subscription.

A couple of immediate caveats: this is ad-supported content, so expect each commercial to pop up at an excruciatingly crucial point in the movie, because that’s how life works. And the selection is definitely on the thinner side: top picks we could find include Memento, Big Fish, Stuart Little, Drive, Dallas, Legends of the Fall, The Patriot, Gilligan’s Island and Heroes, but the drop-off from there in name brand and quality is steep.

Why is Amazon doing this? Because it can, and there could be a future (however small) in the free-to-watch space. Remember, YouTube rolled out its own stable of ad-supported feature films last November. At the very least, it elevates the IMDb brand in use case and flexibility.

What should you think about all this? Roll with it! All you need to watch the content is to enter your email address (which Amazon definitely has already) and stomach a couple commercials. It’s a nice approximation of the movie channels (AMC, TCM) for those who have ditched cable in the last couple years.
