Thirty years ago today, the world was introduced to one of the greatest on-screen bromances of all time: Maverick and The Iceman.

On the surface, Top Gun is a movie about brotherhood, Cold War-era exceptionalism and the unfailing supremacy of the American Armed Forces.

And it was an effective one: the U.S. Navy is on record stating that enlistment into the Naval Aviators program went up by a whopping 500% following the release of the film.

But what is Top Gun really about?
