Michael Phelps — proud owner of 23 Olympic gold medals — has nothing left to prove.
Against other humans, at least.
So the consummate competitor has set his sights on the next logical opponent: sharks.
In an upcoming piece of programming that will air during Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, the soon-to-be-32-year-old will face off against a great white. Dubbed “Great Gold vs. Great White,” the event will air on July 23rd.
“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!”
While it’s unclear exactly what format the race will take, it’s likely that Phelps (top speed of 6 MPH) will lose out to the great white (top speed 25 MPH). But it’ll probably still be a better contest than that other upcoming monumental mismatch.
