When Is a Porsche Like a Flowerpot? When Beyonce Says So.

Dissecting the baby announcement heard round the world

Pop culture lovers lost their damn minds when Beyoncé released her pregnancy photos, but it’s reasonable for a person to ask, “Why should I care?”

Because of the car she’s posing on, for one.

Autoblog points out that amidst the veritable photo album the queen of pop released in conjunction with her announcement of being pregnant with twins, two of them include a red Porsche 914. Specifically, one that has been turned into a flower pot.

This dinged up roadster was part of a short-lived collaboration with Volkswagen in the ‘70s, also known as the VW-Porsche 914. It’s not clear whether the two-seater was previously owned by Beyoncé and husband Jay Z, but either way the floral conversion is warranted since there’s no way they’re packing a family of five in there.

And since Beyoncé doesn’t make artistic decisions lightly, what is the significance of this car in particular? Well we couldn’t dig up a photo of Bey and Jay on a first date in a red Porsche 914, but we found this Jay Z lyric from “That’s How You Like It,” a song from Beyoncé’s first solo album Dangerously in Love (all about their blossoming relationship):

“My accent from New York / My way of thinking is slightly off / They like the way he floss / Leave the block on a bike, he comes back in a Porsche.”

And on Jay Z’s “Roc Boys (And the Winner Is…)” which has contributing vocals from Beyoncé, he begins a verse with, “Red Porsches, rare portraits.”

Rare portraits indeed. The red Porsche 914: unofficial car of the Knowles-Carter family.
