New York’s about to get dangerous again.
Hulu is adapting a TV version of The Warriors, the 1979 cult action flick about warring gangs in New York that you almost certainly remember best by one man’s suggestion to come out and, well, play-ay.
And before you cry foul, the new show is in good hands. Produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (directors of the prior two Captain America films), the TV series will be an ongoing one-hour drama based both on the 1979 Walter Hill film and the earlier Sol Yurick novel (and, indirectly, the ancient Greek work Anabasis). In the book and movie, one particularly colorful and resourceful street gang — The Warriors — navigates a dangerous and bizarre New York City landscape after becoming murder suspects in a gang leader’s death (Cyrus, the man behind the memorable “Can you dig it?” line).
The Russos, who got their start in sitcoms and primarily with Community (Joe directed one of those fantastic paintball episodes), will also direct the first episode. According to Deadline, the show will “honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence.”
As long as there’s room for the Baseball Furies and The Lizzies, we’re sold.
No air date has been set, nor is there any indication if the New York setting will be updated to include modern dangers (15% broker fees, pizza rats, runaway Citibikes, etc.)
