On September 11, 2001, a series of terror attacks struck the U.S. and shook the nation to its core. Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes, flying two of them into the World Trade Centers in New York City, felling the buildings; one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania; and a fourth rammed into the side of the Pentagon near the nation’s capital. At the time, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram didn’t exist, so the public images captured on that day were taken either by the news media or amateur/professional photographers and videographers.
Yesterday, however, the FBI released a cache of photographs the agency had taken at the Pentagon site, showing the incredible devastation caused by the passenger jet slamming into it (see security footage of the attack above). Notably included in the batch of photos is an image of an identifiable piece of debris from the American Airlines 757 that hit the building, further debunking the conspiracy theory that a missile hit the Pentagon instead. Per the New York Post, the plane somewhat fortunately struck a side of the building that was under construction—but still, 59 people aboard the jet and 125 Pentagon employees lost their lives that day.
