This Financial Calculator Tells You Where, When You Can Retire

Or if you’ll be, y'know, toiling for all eternity

I can never retire.

That’s the very sad conclusion I reached after using the Financial Independence Calculator, an online form that figures out where and when you can quit work in about 15 seconds.

Created by Nomad List, a working and living guide for digital nomads, the FIC asks you a few basic questions about your financial health (income, debt interest rate, monthly spending) and location before calculating the cities where you’ll actually be able to settle down after a life of toiling away for the man. As a [redacted]-year-old writer with little savings and a writer’s income who lives in New York, the calculator suggests I can never, ever quit work.

That said, even the creator of the tool admits these numbers represen rough and abstract estimates.

No matter your fortune, the widget is certainly fun to play around with: for example, if you have just a $57,134 net worth, you can retire in Surabaya, Indonesia at the age of 30, where you’ll spend just $400 on average for rent and $1.82 for dinner (hope you speak Suroboyoan!).
