If you’re looking to do some serious overlanding this summer, why not try to country’s newest long-range trail: the Timberline, in Oregon.
The 40-miler just reopened after an 11-year hiatus caused by a debris flow that washed out the trail near Elliot Glacier in 2006. The U.S. Forest Service has finally completed built a bridge near there relinking the trail. Now, we can’t stress this enough: the Timberline Trail is for advanced hikers. It’ll take you about five days to complete, and you’ll see volcanos, coastal ridges, cascades, high desert and river valleys.
The Oregon Hikers offers the most comprehensive report of the trail, including maps and places to stay. You’ll notice on that site that there are abbreviated version of the epic walk, one of which starts and finishes at the Timberline Lodge, which was the exterior backdrop to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining.
Maybe you’re better off on the 40-miler.
