What to do when the burners are away
The burners, talented flock of Bartertowners that they are, have decamped for Black Rock City. And the bridge, it is closed.
It’s just you, the city, and your lady.
Here’s how to make the most of it.
Brunch and coffee at Outerlands. It’s way out in the Sunset, but traffic will be light. The bread is a mansion of doughy bliss, and the coffee is tasty. Plus the curvilinear driftwood decor makes it feel like you’re in a hollow redwood carved by Eames. We recommend Eggs in Jail and the Dutch Pancake with fresh ricotta.
Full-bellied, truck a mile up the Great Highway to stretch legs and strut your knowledge of the Sutro Baths. Hike up the Land’s End Trail from the ruins to the labyrinth at Eagle’s Point. It’s only a couple miles round trip, and for all the Bowie in Lycra you won’t spy, damn fine panoramic views’ll be in serious supply.
Now cruise out past Baker Beach down Lincoln Blvd for an adult beverage at the Presidio Social Club. The back patio’s just the place to end a day like this, and the house Grog (rum, lime, bitters and beer) goes well with the Bay breeze. If the subject of dessert arises, we suggest the Rhubarb Cake.
