Date Night: Crypt Sessions

The fit, the eats and classic music in a crypt. Let’s go.

January 23, 2017 9:00 am

New York is truly spoilt for choice when it comes to the common date night.

Because where other cities have, uh, Applebee’s, we’ve got intimate concerts in a crypt buried underneath a cathedral.

Seriously. That is a thing. And it’s now selling tickets.

But first, you’re going to gussy up and hit a new hit French eatery Uptown. This dinner plan? A stone cold killer.

Dress Up
Suiting up isn’t just about brownie points from your partner in crime. It’s a means to show respect for the affair at hand. There’s no need go full turn-of-the-century here — just enough to show your date that you can clean up. Go in for Brunello Cucinelli’s Virgin Wool Blazer and Mr. Ford’s polished brogues. And no jeans, knucklehead.

The French
New uptown bistro Little Frog is the sweet spot for winter romance. Elevated fare, but a satisfyingly casual (enough) environment that you all can chop it up without someone standing behind you with white gloves listening in every moment. With a high local crowd, it’s got that old-neighborhood-spot feel with a dose of savoir faire.

The Finale
Back for its second season, Crypt Sessions kicks off February 1st with pianist Laura Downes. Set in an actual crypt under the Church of the Intercession, the evening kicks off with a little vino. Then you’ll settle in for the concert with stylings from Downes’s new album, which features tunes by Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. She’ll be accompanied by violinist Bernaud Roumain. And if your heart strings weren’t yanked enough already, the evening will fold with a spoken-word tribute to Langston Hughes by poet Joshua Bennett. Jump to it. Tickets go fast.
