The directorial debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska, The Lure is a coming-of-age tale that echoes the creepier, pre-Disney version of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. Translation: this isn’t a kids’ movie.

Set in the 1980s, the story follows two vampiric mermaids named Silver and Golden who end up performers in a seedy nightclub where they sing and sometimes strip. And since we wanna avoid spoilers, let’s just say being earthbound doesn’t exactly strip them of their bloodthirsty natures. You can watch the NSFW official trailer above.

The film won won the Special Jury Award for Unique Vision and Design at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and has been described by critics as “very watchable [and] far too weird and far too unique to dismiss” and a “fearless … exotic siren call.”

The Lure opens at the IFC Center in New York City on February 1st and will be moving on to other cities from there.
