Nude Yoga Is Taking Over Instagram and No One’s Complaining

Hint: It’s not because they want you to reciprocate

Whether you choose to view it as a form of artistic expression, a means of promoting body positivity or simply a way to show off, nude yoga is officially trending on Instagram.

We know this because, like all great contemporary trends, it’s got it own hashtag: #NYGyoga.

Believed to be started by user Nude Yoga Girl, the #NYGyoga movement has led to hundreds of social media users posting photos of themselves starkers in yoga poses. Thankfully, as our crack social media research team has learned, most of the users are women.

While we’ve no real way of knowing why everyone and their down dog is joining the movement, we do know Nude Yoga Girl previously told The Cut she just hopes to motivate others.

“With my account, I want to inspire people to realize that everybody is very beautiful and capable of [doing] amazing things with their bodies,” she said. “Yoga helped me accept my body exactly the way it is. Nowadays people can easily get a very false idea of ideal beauty and what nudity truly means because it’s shown mostly in a sexual and unrealistic way.” (We’d also like to cynically point out her account is a way of inspiring others to buy copies of her prints.)

Whatever the reasoning behind it, the #NYGyoga trend has definitely arrived. Here’s proof:
